 In the beginning of 2008 quarterly Polish Journal of Commodity Science under patronage of Polish Commodity Science Society and Committee of Commodity Science of Polish Academy of Sciences – Poznań division celebrates its fifth anniversary. The journal is aimed at presentation and discussion of quality problems and popularization of commodity sciences. As before, each paper contains a wide summary in both Polish and English. The summaries of all the papers published are available at our webpage At the beginning of February 2008 polish commodity science met a severe loss, abandoned by Nestor of packaging research, prof. dr hab Marian Cichoń, head of Department of Packaging Research in the Faculty of Commodity Science, Kraków University of Economics. That is why the current issue of Polish Journal of Commodity Science begins with reminiscence of this great person, scientist and teacher. The article was prepared by prof. dr hab Andrzej Chochół – dean of the Faculty of Commodity Science, Kraków University of Economics. Further papers present research involved with various aspects of quality control of various commodities and food. The series of nine papers presented in this issue is opened by the paper by Starzyk and Pytkowska devoted to safety of cosmetics. Authors discuss this important problem not only in context of 2001 cosmetics act but also pay attention to sources of information on cosmetic recipes and safety of components applied. The consecutive paper by Białas, Arct and Mojski also involves the subject of product safety. Authors discuss an important for consumers problem of safety of hair colors. In the next paper Sikora and Zybura present the possibility of application of sorbitol derivatives as thickener in washing agents. Authors describe the methods of synthesis and basic thickening properties of dibenzoyl sorbitol (D-DBS) in model systems. Analysis of quality factors proved high suitability of the new thickener in household chemistry products. The skin protection against sun radiation is a subject of paper by Horst and Westenfeldera. Authors present results of experimental research of products containing mixtures of titanium dioxide and BMDBM. It was proved that introduction of these mixtures into cosmetics prevents reduction of protection against UV-A. High quality of packaging material is a very important factor determining the quality of product. This problem is a subject of paper by Lisińska-Kuśnierz and Ucherek. Authors analyze the influence of microclimate parameters on water vapor transportation in laminate PETmet/LDPE. It is concluded that application of packaging materials characterized by high barrier with respect to oxide and water vapor is crucial for high quality of products packed. Further two papers refer to attempts of cenosphere application in trade products. A cenosphere is a product of coal combustion. Sułek, Wasilewski, Klimaszewska and Małysa propose application of cenosphere as active agent in pastes for cleaning hard surfaces. Authors assess stability of the pastes prepared. It was concluded that stability of model pastes containing cenosphere is comparable to the similar market products. In the consecutive paper Sułek, Klimaszewska and Pytlas propose application of cenosphere as the active component of milks for cleaning heavily polluted surfaces. Authors presented results of analysis of selected quality factors. It was proved that the quality of these new products is comparable to the quality of tested trade products. It was concluded that the results obtained can be the exit point for waste disposal, surfactants and organic solvents. The increasing demand for soybean meal as high-protein material imposes research on this raw material. In the case of non-stable feed components an effective quality control system is required. An application of near infrared reflection spectrometry opens interesting possibilities in feeds analysis. The NIRS method is described by Bułhak, Drzewiwniecka and Zalewski as a quick method of soybean meal content testing. It is suggested that the method can replace many analytical methods that employ toxic reagents. That is why the NIRS method is called “green”. Altogether with its reliability and short period of analysis the features enable its application in food industry for quality control of raw materials and products during production process and in laboratory tests. There is a one notice in Announcements section. It is a paper by Czernyszewicz on official control of quality of fresh fruit and vegetables in Poland. The fourteenth issue of our quarterly is closed by section TPJ Information. A report from Cosmetologists Conference taking place in Lódź in November 2007 can be read there.
