The authenticity of the selected coffee brands available on Tricity market

Summary

The issue of authenticity of the product is not a new issue in the field of commodity science. Nowadays, a quite common method of coffee counterfeiting is a partial or total replacement of Coffea arabica L. with Coffea canephora varietas robusta Pierre ex Froehner. The whole bean coffee, ground coffee or its extracts may be subject of manipulation which relates to the price that has to be paid for each of these raw materials. The aim of the study was the verification of the authenticity of the selected roasted coffees available on the Tricity market on the basis of their caffeine content and in the case of whole bean coffee on the basis of visual evaluation of these coffee beans. The indication was made by comparing the obtained results of caffeine content with the previously prepared standard curve. C. Arabica whole bean coffee coming from Colombia (100% Arabica  – Colombia Excelso) and Coffea canephora var. robusta whole bean coffee from Indonesia (100% Robusta  – Indonesia) and their blends in the following proportions: 80/20, 60/40, 40/60, 20/80 (A/R) were used in the study as reference samples.  Coffees available on Polish market are frequently not labelled in terms of their country of origin, roasting degree, or size of beans (for whole bean coffees). Not all manufacturers inform the consumer that their coffee is a blended product containing  Coffea arabica (arabica) and Coffea canefora varietas robusta (robusta). There is no information about the combination percentage of the particular coffee species either. The content of caffeine can be used in the coffee authenticity estimation process.
