The role of Chia seed oil in shaping selected quality parameters of cosmetics for atopic skin

Summary Improper skin care can lead to skin irritation and even the appearance or intensity of skin diseases. Such an example is atopic dermatitis, which is one of the most important and very current problems. In Poland in 2017, 1-3% of illnesses and diagnoses of atopic dermatitis were reported in adults and about 20% in children. The common feature of all patients with atopic dermatitis is itching and dry skin. Partial reduction of atopic dermatitis symptoms can be achieved through proper skin care. Therefore, in this type of dermatosis it is extremely important to choose the composition of cosmetic formulations, in particular the substances that lubricate the skin – emollients.  In this paper, the possibility of using Chia Oil as an emollient for the production of body lotions for atopic skin was analyzed. For this purpose, a series of body lotions prototypes was prepared, differing in the ratio of Chia Oil to the commonly used emollient – Caprylic/Capric Triglicerides (8:0; 6:2; 4:4; 2:6; 0:8% wt.). All the formulations were compliant with the standards for natural cosmetics – COSMOS (Cosmetic Organic Standard). The following studies were carried out for the formulations of body lotions: stability, dynamic viscosity, yield point and texture analysis. The condition of the skin before and after application of the lotions (skin hydration level and transepidermal water loss) was also evaluated. The obtained results were correlated with the results obtained for selected commercial body lotions. It was found that with increasing Chia Oil concentration up to 6%, viscosity, yield point, adhesion and hardness increased. Further increase in Chia Oil concentration leads to a decrease in tested parameters, which may translate into “easier” application of this type of cosmetics to the skin. Moreover, it was observed that an increase in Chia Oil concentration in body lotions leads to a significant increase in skin hydration and decrease in transepidermal water loss.
