Summary
Natural and organic cosmetics are increasingly becoming more and more popular. They are produced from the best, highest quality raw materials primarily of plant origin according to technologies overseen by certification organizations. As is the case with foodstuffs, cosmetics also undergo certification carried out by various organizations. However, currently there are no uniform international guidelines on condtions which a cosmetic product must satisfy to be termed natural or organic. Each certification body has its own lists of raw materials which are approved or forbidden in the manufacture of such cosmetics and its own production and control procedures. This paper presents the most important requirements which should be satisfied by a natural and organic cosmetic product according to the standards of the best known certification organizations, such as ECOCERT, BDIH, COSMEBIO, SOIL ASSOCIATION ORGANIC, COSMO and NATRUE. Additionally, the history of legal regulations and safety aspects of natural and organic cosmetics have been discussed.
